In just 10 short days, my little baby will be ONE! When did that happen?

She will celebrate her second Easter before her first birthday! How quirky is that?

Lexi's First "Kids" Party

Lexi's cousin invited her to her 7th birthday party today...at an indoor playground. Lexi had a GREAT time, though she really couldn't partake in all the fun the jungle gyms had to offer since she can't climb them yet. Here are a few pictures from the day.

Just chillin in her highchair after the party

WHAT??!!

Sliding down the slides.

She REALLY liked the slide.

Filed

I finally filed our taxes this morning. They were done early in February, but I never got around to efiling them until this morning. We're getting a nice amount back...though not nearly what I thought we would now that Lexi is a dependent. But we made less last year...no bonuses and no overtime. We paid less in mortgage interest due to the refi we did in March...and I changed my W4 from 0 to 1. So taking that all into consideration, it makes sense. It's just disheartening when I hear people who are getting back double digits and I have to wonder how in the world they managed that.

On another note, my cell phone is "broken". I have an LG Rhythm and it SUCKS. The buttons on the front are "stuck" so they don't work. So basically, I can only use my phone for calls and nothing else. I couldn't even hit the snooze on the alarm this morning. When I took it into US Cellular last night, the guy rudely told me that I have a virus and have to get a software upgrade on it...but they can't do it there, I have to take it to a location that has a technician. So I'll be doing that this evening. What a fun way to spend my Thursday night.

11 months - posted one day early.

Dear Alexis,

You are 11 months old today.  11 months!  I know I say this every month, but where has the time gone?  You're growing up before my eyes and seem to learn something new almost everyday!

Gone are the days of being able to put you in your swing and let you "hang out" while mommy cooks dinner, or uses the potty.  You want to be part of everything we do, and rightly so.  You are an important part of this family.

You are so close to walking.  SO CLOSE!  You will walk along with us, holding just one finger on one of our hands, while your other hand waves proudly at anyone you see.  You are left foot dominant when you walk...stepping forward with your left foot, then bringing up your right.  For that reason, Auntie calls you "Peg Leg".  LOL.

This next month is going to be so fun.  Not only is it a countdown to your first birthday, but you also have some fun things going on.

You got a spot in swim class again, that starts this Saturday and goes for 8 weeks.  You love the class, and you love being in the water.  We're so happy about that, since Daddy and I love swimming as well.

On the 20th, you will attend your first ever kids birthday party.  Your cousins, Emily and Sam, invited you!  Such fun!  Emily turns 7 this month, and Sam will be 4, guess when?  That's right!  You and Sam share a birthday!

On the 27th, you are having breakfast with someone VERY special.  Can you guess who it is?  It's the Easter Bunny!  Mommy and Daddy will take you to the Bird Haven so that we can all have breakfast with this special "friend".  I can't wait.  I hope you are excited and not frightened.  It's hard to believe you will celebrate your second Easter before your first birthday!

I can never tell you enough how much I love you, Peanut.  You make me smile each and every time I see you.  I love how you flap your arms like a bird when you see me, your way of telling me to pick you up.  I love how your face lights up when you look my way.  I love that you started giving kisses, even if they are open mouthed!  I love how you pull on your hair when you're tired.  Or how you rub your whole face, just like mommy does when she's tired.  I love how you snuggle into the corner of your crib, with your head right against the bumper pad, almost as if you're trying to burrow into it.  I love walking into your room, and seeing you standing in your crib, waiting to be picked up.  I love how you love to love on your Tigger.

This blog, this online journal, was started as a means to vent my feelings about our trouble conceiving a baby.  It morphed into a pregnancy journal, and now into a journal of sorts for you, Lexi, my darling daughter.  If I should be gone tomorrow, I can only hope that you can read these words when you're older, and say with 100% certainty, Yes, My mom...she loved me.

I love you Peanut.

Love,

Mommy

Got it

We picked up the playground for Lexi last night!  Woo Hoo!  She's going to LOVE it...well, she will as soon as all the snow melts, we pick up the 500 lbs of dog poop that's in the yard, and we set it up.  For now, it resides in the garage.

After we picked up the set, we went out to dinner.  We were in the neighborhood of a restaurant that I really like...so we went.  Had good food and great conversation.  It was a wonderful impromptu date with the hubs.  We need to do it more often.

Excited

I'm so excited.  And you're going to think I'm nutso when I tell you why.  I believe we are getting Lexi an 8-in-1 climber/playground.

I say "believe" because I'm still waiting on confirmation from the seller that we can pick it up tonight.  I found this on craigs.list for $225.  These things are $500 in the stores!  We've been looking for one for Lexi's birthday and had seen some others being sold on the list but they were already sold.  Keep your fingers crossed that we can get this one!

These are a few of my favorite things...

I've been meaning to do a post about my favorite things that I use daily for Lexi...as in meaning to do it for the last 6 months.  I have a small list of things that I liked and disliked over the last 10.5 months.  So I guess I'll start at the beginning with 2 products.  One that I wanted to love, but didn't love me; and the other that we still use every single day.

When Lexi first came home from the hospital, I had planned on breastfeeding exclusively.  Well, that tanked because she came so early, but we still gave breastfeeding the ole college try.  In preparation for the hours I would spend with her attached to my breast, we purchased a My Breast Friend nursing pillow:

Now, I've not been shy about saying I'm a plus sized momma...while I really thought the concept of this pillow is awesome (allowing mom to move around while baby is nursing, providing almost "hands free" nursing etc), it didn't fit me.  Literally.  I could not get the pillow to comfortably fit around me without feeling like I had a too small ring around my waist.  I tried adjusting it and just couldn't get a comfortable fit.  I was very disappointed to not be able to use it.  I found a regular old pillow from our bed worked to support her, but didn't give me the freedom to really move around.

Since breastfeeding didn't really work out for me, bottles were, are still are, important to me.  We originally thought we wanted glass bottles...but found that they were heavy to hold, especially at 3am when we were nodding off while feeding her.  Lexi also had issues with reflux, so we didn't want her swallowing more air than she needed to be.  We tried numerous bottles, from Dr Brown's to Avent before finally settling on the Platex Ventaire

I loved the curved design of the bottle as well as the venting system, which helps prevent air from mixing in with the milk.  We could actually hear the air escaping from the bottom of the bottle as she drank.  I also liked that they are super easy to clean, and that they are easy to assemble.  I had a problem figuring out the Dr Browns, but these were a snap.  The downfall?  The markings on the outside of the bottles (for the ozs) faded over time with each washing.  We had to take a permanent marker and mark the outside so we would know where the oz markings were.  Now that Lexi is older, she has a very easy time holding these as well.

I have some more favorite things...but I have to save them for another post.  I actually should do some work now!

I should state that I am putting this information out there because it might be useful to someone, NOT because the manufacturer sent me anything or asked me to.

Temper, temper

DH and I got our first look at Lexi's temper this past weekend.  Let me preface this by saying that Lexi is a good natured kid.  She doesn't cry or fuss often and when she does, it's usually because something is wrong, ie...she doesn't feel good, is overtired etc.  Well, the overtiredness played a small role in her display of her temper yesterday.  She had her morning nap...about 2 hours...waking at about 11:15am.  DH and I went to a friend's house to watch the USA v. Canada gold metal hockey game after she got up.  Well, she wouldn't nap at our friend's house.  There was too much going on and being in a strange place, she just didn't want to sleep.  But still, she was good natured.  Only slightly fussy.  We left around 4pm and Lexi was in her crib asleep by 4:15.  She slept until 5:30.  I thought that would have been enough of a nap...apparently, it wasn't.

DH gives Lexi our remote control to play with on occassion...after removing the batteries.  Well, yesterday, she took it off the table to play with it.  DH took it away from her to remove the batteries...and that's when we got a glimpse of the temper.  Lexi proceeded to flop down on her butt from a kneeling position and started kicking her legs and "yelling".  I won't say crying, because there were no tears.  This was more of a scream/yell.  She did this until DH gave her the remote back.  Then all was peaceful.

I thought about telling DH that he shouldn't have given her the remote at that point, since it was rewarding her behavior, but I think he was as shocked as I was that she did what she did, that he didn't even think about it.

I hope this doesn't become a regular thing for her.  She's never minded when we've taken something away from her...she usually moves on to something else.

Any suggestions out there for how to handle this should it occur again?  Who am I kidding, I know it will happen again, it's just a matter of when?!

It's over :(

Lexi had her last swim class today...we were the only ones to show up!  Really?  Do people have that kind of expendable cash that they can pay for a class and not come?  Seriously, Lexi was the only one that was there EVERY week!

She didn't "pass" the class though to go on to Water Babies II...but her teacher, Angela, said that it was only because of her age.  Water Babies II starts them swimming away from their parents...and Lexi is in that "clingy" stage and doesn't want to be away from me.  But Angela said she'd be happy to have Lexi in her class again next session...well, when I tried to sign her up, they said the class was full!  Angela said she can take up to 10 kids, but the system was set at 5.  So we're on a wait list.  I can't tell you how bummed I am about it.  I didn't realize how much I look forward to spending that time with her, just us, until it was over.  I know we'll still have our Saturday mornings together...but it's amazing how much that swim class meant to me.

Oh well, let's hope someone cancels.

Last class

Lexi's last swim class is tomorrow morning.  I'm thinking of signing her up for another session...but I have to talk to her teacher and see if she should repeat the same class (Water Babies I) or take the next one (Water Babies II).  I want to know what the next class does different than this one.  I'm happy to repeat the same class, just to give her more exposure in the water...though DH and I were thinking of just taking her during the pool's open swim time.  I hesitate a little though because there is no structure then.  It's open to everyone and I'm afraid kids will be rough housing and splashing and will scare the beejesus out of her.  During class, it's her class and a few others, but they are structured.  No roughhousing.  Something to think about.

UGH

Conversation just overheard in my workplace:

Girl #1 ....yea, I'm actually expecting too

Girl #2 (presently 9 months along) Wow congratulations!  When are you due?

Girl #1  October.  We tried for a really long time and were actually supposed to start IVF in March, but it just happened on it's own!

OMG!  I think I just threw up in my mouth.  What is she...like 8 weeks along?  Makes me ill.

Thursday, February 25, 2010

I was thinking about something the other day and a recent post by a fellow blogger really got me thinking about it.

I've been blogging for 2 1/2 years. Which means I've been reading some blogs for AT LEAST that amount of time.  It blows my mind that I've been "following" the lives of people for that long.  People that I've never met face to face...yet care for as much as I would care for any of my IRL friends.

There are numerous first birthdays coming up...and some just recently past.  And to think, that I "knew" these women before their babies were ever conceived really makes me think about how quickly time passes.  And now that Lexi is here, and herself almost a year old, I've ever cognizant about just how fast the time goes.

She's no longer the helpless little baby that we brought home from the hospital.  She's developing a personality all her own and gaining more and more independence every day.  She is growing up before my eyes...and I'm both sad and happy about that.  Sad to see the "baby" year go, and happy that she's here to begin with.

************************************

On another note, Lexi broke my heart last night.  She was crying because we had woken her up from her nap (it was almost 7pm and she needed to be up so that she'd go to bed "on time") and reached for my mom while I was holding her.  I knew the time would come that she would seek comfort from my mom, her primary caregiver while we are working, but I wasn't prepared for the emotion that came with seeing that gesture.  I wanted to cry myself.  It cut to my core.  And while I know she doesn't mean to hurt my feelings, and that it's a normal thing, it was still the worst feeling.  My mom, seeing the situation, thankfully, left the room and I was able to comfort Lexi and she stopped crying.  We then enjoyed an extended bath and some extra cuddle time before bed.  She may not have needed it, but I did.  And I'm glad I was able to get my "Lexi fix".

Oh, and to answer Kimbosue's question...Lexi currently has 6 teeth completely in, and 2 more that just cut through.  She has 4 fully on top and 2 on the bottom...and 2 more on the bottom just cut through.  Yes, she has a mouthful of teeth!

Lexi on Valentine's Day

A beautiful girl.

It had been awhile since we took pics with her bunny...this was on the 10th...her 10 month birthday. I like how she's looking at the bunny, almost as if to say "Hey, I haven't seen you in awhile!"

Love this picture.

But I love this one more.

Gimme the camera MOM!

I'm going to eat it!

A Newborn's Conversation with God

Someone sent this to me today...and while I'm not a deeply religious person...this still resonated with me and made me well up with tears. Enjoy.

A baby asked God, "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?"

God said, "Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you."

The child further inquired, "But tell me, here in heaven I don't have to do anything but sing and smile to be happy.."

God said, "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. And you will feel your angel's love and be very happy."

Again the small child asked, "And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language?"

God said, "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak." "

And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?"

God said, "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray."

"Who will protect me?"

God said, "Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life."

"But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore."

God said, "Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you."

At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from Earth could be heard and the child hurriedly asked, "God, if I am to leave now, please tell me my angel's name."

God said, "You will simply call her, Mom ."

Been sick

Sorry I haven't posted...I've been sick for the last few days. Stomach issues, sore throat...you name it, I've got it. Today is the only day I made it in to work...and I only worked a half day from home yesterday before I passed out in bed.

So that's the story...hope to be back full swing next week.

Did she say what I think she did?

So last night, after her bath, I was getting Lexi ready for bed. We have a little "ritual" after her bath where I give her the diaper to hold while I put her onesie over her head and we "talk". So I'm saying "mom mom mom mom" over and over and it sounds like "mumumumumumum"...all of a sudden Lexi looked me dead in the eye and said "mum". So I said "mom" and she said "mum" back and forth. Part of me thinks she was just imitating me, but part of me thinks that she actually said "mom" and knew what she was saying. It warmed my heart to hear it.

She then proceeded to throw up her entire bottle all over me. Seriously, it was in my hair, down my front, down my back...everywhere. Gross. So as my hubby cleaned the carpet, and my mom cleaned up Lexi...I took a shower, all while I had the warm fuzzies from hearing my daughter say "mum"...whether she meant it or not.

10 months

Dear Alexis,

It's been 10 months since your birth.
10 months since you entered this world with the most amazing cry.
10 months since I held you in my arms for the very first time.
10 months since I cried hot happy tears of joy.

It seems like a lifetime ago. I can't remember what life was like before you came to us. Nor do I want to. You are my sunshine. My only sunshine. You make me happy, when sky's are grey. You'll never know, dear, how much I love you. We sing that song everynight just before you go to sleep. Mommy couldn't bear to sing the ABCs anymore, and this little diddy is so spot on.

You've mastered crawling this past month and are pulling up on everything and everyone. We've "taught" you how to get down safely off the couch (feet first) and you love climbing down and then raising your arms to get back up.

You're doing really well in swim class, I'm so proud of you. You don't cry in the water like some of the other babies and will willingly float on your back...something your teacher says most babies your age don't like to do.

Table foods remain a challenge...I think more for mommy than you. I'm so afraid you will choke on something that I don't offer you anything bigger than your windpipe...though I know I need to so that you learn to bite off small pieces. I know grandma works with you on that. I hope I won't become an overprotective momma...I want you to be able to explore and experience things for yourself...but I also want you safe. Daddy and I worked too hard to bring you into this world to see you harm yourself. I know bumps and bruises will happen, but if I can keep you safe, while still giving you your freedom, then that's the goal.

Your first birthday party is booked. It's so hard to comprehend that I only have one more "month" letter to write to you before you are a year. Where did the time go? I love you more than words can ever express.

Love,

Mommy

Birthdays and Shoes

Lexi got her first pair of walkers yesterday. She's been wearing baby Chucks, but those don't have any real support and they were more for keeping her feet warm and looks than anything. But her auntie had taken her to get sized and fitted for shoes about a week ago, and they came in yesterday...

Very cute I think. Much nicer than the baby walkers I remember. Anyway, she LOVES her new shoes and will lift her pant leg up to show them to you. I'm thinking 4 more weeks and she'll be running around the house.

We've also booked Lexi's first birthday party. We're having it at a local restaurant to avoid having to clean the house before and after...and really, I don't have room for 30+ people IN my house. Every party we've hosted has been held in the backyard under tents...but April is just too unpredictable to have it outside. So restaurant it is. Plus, then, I don't have to worry about cooking...now I just need to order her cake!

She stood! All by herself!

OK...so she only stood for about 15 seconds...but it was 15 seconds ALL BY HERSELF!

Disheartened

So I'm really disappointed right now. I had my review with my manager a few weeks ago. It wasn't what I expected at all. He basically told me that he wanted to rate me as "Needs Improvement" but that when he looked at the objectives and goals that were agreed on at the beginning of last year for my position I met them all. But that when he "compares me to my peers I could be doing more". All the sales people that I support said they were extremely pleased with my performance last year. I just found out today that I will not be getting a bonus OR an increase. When I asked my manager why, I was told that it was based on my performance. I'm SO upset right now. He's given me NO constructive reasons for why he's rated me what he did. I really believe that this is just another personal jab at me.

Some background: I, and 3 of my sales people, used to work for another manager. About 2 years ago that manager left...and sales force was re-organized as a result. Just before the reorg, my current manager had hired someone he really wanted. When the reorg happened, I was not slated to move to his team...but my 3 sales people wouldn't move without me. So he had to give up the person he just hired to the team I would have stayed on.

I talked to 2 of my 5 sales people after I found out...and neither one could believe that I wasn't getting anything. What they also found unacceptable was that I had to call him to find out. He didn't even give me the courtesy of calling to tell me (he's in New York and I'm in Chicago). That's the other thing! I also found out that he did not solicit feedback from my sales people in order to complete my review. I don't deal with my manager directly...yes I report up to him, but I really work for the 5 sales people.

The other kicker? We have 12 sales people on our team and 4 of us who support them. I support 5, a girl in AZ supports 5, and 2 in NY each have 1! And he's seriously going to tell me that I'm not up to par with my peers?

I'm just SO upset right now. I really feel this was a jab at me...since we don't see eye to eye on things. UUGGHH!

I Would Die For That

Anyone familiar with Kellie Coffey? If not, she's an amazing country singer...check out this link and then come back.

So? What did you think?

I only recently came across this artist a few months ago. But this song had me in tears, and still does each time I hear it. It speaks to me in ways that I can't even describe. I wish I had come across this song much earlier in my journey. While it breaks my heart, it also gives me great strength.

While I know I'm blessed to have Lexi in my life, the pain that we went through to get here is still there. I still hurt when I see a pregnant woman. Still cringe when I hear pg announcements. Still pray that I don't receive any shower invitations. The journey to Lexi was not an easy one, nor was it pain free. I naively thought that once I had my baby, I wouldn't think like an infertile anymore...that I wouldn't hurt like one anymore. That's not the case. I had a gynie appointment last week for my annual exam...and sitting in the waiting room surrounded by big bellies...well, it was more than I could handle. I didn't know these women's stories, or how they got to where they were, but I was SO jealous. It surprised even me. My immediate thought, again, went to "Why them and not me?". Silly isn't it? Considering the beautiful daughter that was waiting for me at home.

I guess it never gets any easier. Maybe it will when we consider our little family "complete"? But when will that be? DH wants a son. He's always wanted a son. He loves Lexi, more than anything...but he'd like a son to pass the family name to. He knows that if we did IVF again that there are no guarantees we'd have a boy...would I then feel pressure to try "just one more time"? We're lucky to have some insurance coverage left...enough for maybe 2 or 3 cycles...though meds would be out of pocket. Do I get back onto the infertility treatment highway? Do I want to? You'd think the obvious answer would be yes, given my jealousy of bellies, but I'm not entirely sure.

Days I hate

There are 2 days of the week that I don't really care for. The first is Mondays. My Mondays are my LOOOOOONG days. My Monday starts at 4:30am (even before) when I get up and get dressed. Lexi and I are out the door by 5am (advance prep on Sunday evening allows me to be up and ready in 30 minutes!) for the drive to my mom's. We're at my mom's by 6am and I can sit with her and Lexi until 6:30 when my dad is ready to leave. My dad and I take the train into the city together on Mondays. I leave work at 4:30 and wait for my dad...we catch a 5:15pm train and are back at his house by 6pm. Now, depending on if Lexi is napping or not, I'll either hang out, or we pack up and leave. I usually walk in the door with Lexi on my hip between 7 and 7:30 pm. Loooooong day.

But I can deal with the long Mondays. I'm not thrilled with them, but I can deal. It's Tuesdays that I HATE. Lexi is still asleep when I leave at 5:45am (my normal time for the rest of the week). And after work, DH and I play in a poker league. So I don't get home until after 10pm most Tuesdays....well after Lexi's bedtime. So I don't see my peanut at all...and I swear, I go through Lexi withdrawal. Now, I know that the poker league is something that DH and I choose to participate in, and that we can easily NOT go...but it's our one night out and we've been going since Lexi was 2 weeks old (we used to take her with us when she was small enough to sleep in her carseat...DH and I joke that her first words will be "All In"). I have a love/hate relationship with Tuesdays. I look forward to the social interaction and the game play...but am always torn about going to play, or going home and seeing Lexi.

Tonight, I don't have to make that decision. Lexi is coming to poker! Everyone there LOVES her...and always ask when we're bringing her back...so everyone will get to see her tonight! My mom has an appointment, so she won't make it to my house in time for DH to leave...so he's bringing her with and my mom will pick her up from there! WooHoo....I get to see her!!

9 months old

Dear Alexis,

Hi Peanut! You're 9 months old today. Mommy is in complete shock. I can't believe it's been 9 months since you entered this world. 9 months since I first laid eyes on you. 9 months since I fell instantly in love with you. You amaze us everyday, but recently you've been doing so many new things. Just this past Friday you started pulling yourself up to your knees in your crib. So mommy lowered your mattress one notch (we still had it all the way up). Then Saturday, after swim class, and while Mommy was sitting in your room, you pulled yourself up to stand! And then started WALKING around your crib while holding on to the rails! Um...baby girl, when did you get to be such a BIG girl??!! You also will walk along on the floor if someone holds your hands...but yet, you don't crawl forwards. You can push yourself backwards, but can't crawl forwards. Mommy thinks you might skip crawling and starting walking soon...and that's scary! My baby? Walking? Seems like only yesterday we brought you home!

You also have 6 teeth in now. 4 on top and 2 on the bottom. You've bitten your fingers on multiple occasions and look at me like "what just happened"? But you haven't mastered actually chewing your food yet. Which makes Mommy nervous when people hand you goldfish crackers or other yummy tidbits. You love your Cream of Wheat...and dislike the "baby" cereals. You're eating almost a whole jar of food at lunch and dinner, along with your yogurt melts (your favorite) and puffs. You're wearing size 4 diapers and size 12 month clothes...though the thermal underwear Mommy just bought is 18 months and fits you perfectly.

Oh sweetie. People told me all along that time would go by in a flash, but I still can't believe that I'm looking at venues for your first birthday party already. You will always be my baby. I love you more than words can ever express. I hope that you will feel that love as you grow, and know just how much you are wanted.

Love always,

Mommy

Swim class

Lexi had her very first swim class this morning. Grandma came along to take pictures and for moral support for me! Class was fun. They only run 30 minutes, which is good. Lexi was scared and nervous at first, grabbing on to me and clinging to me as if her life depended on it (well, I guess it did), but she relaxed within about 5 minutes of being in the water. She's not thrilled about being on her tummy in the water, but LOVES to float on her back. She successfully floated with just her head resting on my shoulder...and my hands directly under her but not touching. The instructor had us sing songs and have them kick and splash.

Then came the part I was afraid of. Putting her under. The instructor said to blow in her face and dunk her and pull her up. Well, since Lexi is still nursing a snotty nose (it was MUCH better...no snot in the pool) she's still breathing through her mouth, hence her mouth remained open even after I blew in her face. Needless to say, there was no dunking. I did manage to get her mouth in the water, only to have her inhale what flowed in. Hacking, choking baby = a mom who wasn't dunking. At least not this week.

All in all, I really believe Lexi enjoyed it. There are only 6 kids in the class. There is one younger than her (7 months) and the rest are older. The 7 month old cried the entire class...poor thing. But she was as happy as can be...until I took her out...then she cried! LOL

My mom took pictures...so I'll try to post some later. I have to figure out how to obscure the faces of the other people in them.

Follow up

Just some follow up to some questions...

Jen asked how the ear piercing went and if I was afraid she'd pull them out. The answer? It went well...and I'm not afraid of her pulling them out. The earring posts have grooves in them that the back "sits" in. You have to grab the earring from the front as well as the back and pull them apart to remove them (I know from my own piercing experience). So she'd need to coordinate both hands to get them out, not going to happen. She doesn't even seem to notice them...except in the mirror when the light hits them and they look all sparkly and such.

Kimbosue asked if I was scared about the swim lessons Lexi starts tomorrow. The answer? No and yes. No because I get to be with her and I know she LOVES the water. Yes because I know, inevitably, part of the class will involve me putting her under water...which I'm totally nervous about. I mean, she gets water in her face all the time when I'm rinsing her hair, but actually dunking my baby under the water? That scares the poop out of me.

Hey Rotten...I just remembered that C was in swim classes and had to go under...how did she take it? What was the process to put her under? Nervous me wants to know!

Delurking and other randomness

Sorry it's been awhile since my last post. Things were hectic with the holidays.

Before we get started...it's National Delurking Week! Come out of the woodwork to say hello...no long comment needed! Who knows, I may add you to my reader!

Christmas Eve was spent at the in-laws house. Lexi received some very nice presents of clothes (which were MUCH needed as she's outgrowing things so quickly!) and a few toys.

Christmas Day was at our house. My family came in the morning and Santa also came to visit Lexi (which was really gwandpa all dressed up). She wasn't sure what to make of Santa when he came...even though she saw him at the mall. She received more toys and clothes, and our family room looked like T0ys R US blew up. The in-laws came by later for dinner. It was nice to have the whole family around.

The Saturday after Christmas, my sister hosted a small get together at her house for friends and my cousin from OK came in.

New Years Eve was low key. We were all in bed by midnight. Ok, I'll be honest, Lexi was sleeping and DH and I were, um, "reconnecting" when midnight hit.

New Years Day my cousin from OK came by with her 2 boys. We haven't seen them since August when they left. The boys (3 and 18 mo) opened their presents, and they gave Lexi hers...clothes and a cold! Yep, the boys had runny noses Friday and by Sunday night, Lexi was a snotty mess.

Oh, and Sunday Lexi got her ears pierced. Now I know there are some people who believe that ear piercing should be done later, when the child is older and/or asks for it...and I respect that. I just don't follow that same belief. We all had our ears pierced as babies and I wanted my daughter to have hers done as well. I respect you, you respect me. Thank you.

So in all, it was a busy time...Lexi starts swim classes on Saturday and turns 9 months (OMG!) old on Sunday. She was at the dr for her runny nose on Monday and weighed 19lbs 4ozs and was 29 inches long.

I'll try to post more pics later tonight!

Merry Christmas

Santa came to see Lexi on her first Christmas. She was happy to get toys and sad to get clothes. Pictures will be forthcoming.

May you have a blessed day with your loved ones!

36weeks 3 days

Dearest Lexi,

Mommy missed your 8 month post on the 10th...we've been so busy gearing up for the holidays...so I thought I'd post today, which is also a special day. No, it's not Friday, so it's not a weekly "birthday"...and it's not the 10th, so it's not a monthly "birthday". No. Today you are 36 weeks and 3 days old, why is that special you ask? Because today, sweet girl, you are officially "out" longer than you were "in". Makes mommy a little sad to know that you're growing up so fast. But I love to marvel at all the things you can do.

You're starting to wave bye bye...though it looks more like you're waving to yourself, but you try. You also shake your head "no"...and I truly believe you're saying no since you only do it when I'm trying to get you to do something. You're starting to pull up on us. You'll grab at our shirts and try to pull yourself into a standing position. Makes for a precarious situation when we're out in public if mommy's not wearing the "right" shirt. But it's still fun to see you doing these things. You've tried dry toast, which you're not too fond of, but you LOVE your egg yolks from the hard boiled eggs we make. You haven't mastered the sippy cup yet, or like holding your own bottle, but that's ok...you're getting there. You also have cut your top left tooth. And the top right isn't far behind.

Oh peanut, I love you more than I can ever describe. You are my everything. You make me smile even when I'm feeling down. These past 36 weeks have flown by in a flash, but I treasure every moment in a special part of my heart that's reserved just for you.

Love always,

Mommy

To commenter Jill in my area...please email me, your blog is private and you don't have an email address on your profile. Thanks!

First Snow of the Season

We were "blessed" with the first snow of the season here in Chicagoland. We only received about an inch, but it was SO pretty. Lexi was too tired this morning on our way to gramma's that she didn't even notice the white stuff falling from the sky. Though having her sure makes me a more cautious driver. I was never a speed demon to begin with, but with slick roads and precious cargo strapped into her "big girl" seat...the anxiety level I felt during this morning's drive was higher than I've felt in a long time. Normally, its 45 - 55 minutes to grammy's (my mom's)...today it took a good 90 minutes. And I'm not complaining about the extra time, but MAN...I was petrified. I kept driving past cars that had skidded off the road and thinking, please, please, please let me stay on the road. If it were just me in the car...no big thing, but now that I have Lexi with me, I'm a different kind of driver. Anyone else change the way they drive in inclement weather when the babes are in tow?

On another note. DH and I had a date on Friday night, sans baby. My mom stayed an extra night so we could go to dinner and a movie. I hadn't been to a movie in at least a year. It was actually quite nice. We ate at 0live Garden and enjoyed some Lambrusc0 and calamari with dinner. We went to see Everyb0dy's Fine...with R0bert DeNir0. Great flick...kinda sad, but well worth seeing IMO.

Yesterday we decorated the tree. We had the Christmas music playing and I couldn't help but well up with tears this year, compared to years past. I have what I've always wanted. If I get nothing else ever again, I'll be content because I have her. And she may not know what all the fuss is about this year, but seeing the wonder in her eyes while she looks up at the massive tree, sparkling with lights, my heart overflows.

Giving up or giving in?

I apologize in advance for this post...it's all over the place, but that's how I'm feeling...like I'm leaving parts of myself all over the place and there aren't many pieces left.

It's been 2 weeks since my last entry...I haven't felt much like blogging. I haven't felt like doing much at all. I normally get "blue" during this time of year, but with everything else that's been going on, I've been feeling especially down. The one thing that can always bring a smile to my face? Lexi. Even if she's screaming at the top of her lungs at 2am.

I've lost my ability to work from home. My manager sites that it was an "accommodation for me due to my personal circumstances" but that it can no longer be extended. My "circumstances" haven't changed. I still live 2 hours away. I still am trying to seek therapy. I still have a baby at home that I want to be with. But it doesn't seem to matter. Nothing seems to matter.

Hubby went to 2 therapy sessions with me. He doesn't see the point of "couples therapy" since I'm the one who is "broken". His words to our therapist...she needs to fix herself before anything can be fixed between us. Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize that MY life was completely SEPARATE from yours. I didn't know that OUR life together had no impact on ME. Can't you understand that part of the reason I'm depressed is BECAUSE of you? Because of the rockiness of our relationship. Can't you see that I'm drowning here? That by asking you to come to therapy that I'm reaching out for HELP?

I put on a smile for those around me...my co-workers, my parents, my friends....when inside I'm crying...thinking why can't they see through the facade? Am I THAT good of an actress that no one can see the hurt in my eyes? No one can see that my smile doesn't reach my eyes? Or am I just telling myself that it doesn't? I don't know anymore.

I love my daughter. She is what keeps me from going completely insane. At 8 months old...that's a mighty weight for her to carry. She shouldn't have to.

300th post

This is my 300th post. 300. Wow. It took me just over 2 years to get to 300 since I don't post everyday. But still an achievement nonetheless.

I'm hoping that one day FAR into the future, Lexi can read these posts. Maybe it will give her a little insight into who her mom is when I'm not telling her to be home at x time, or no, she can't have the car. Maybe these words that I type will allow her to see that, while mom may not let her get away with murder, I love her. And have loved her since before she was ever conceived.

I'm not the best communicator person to person. I love yous weren't prevalent in my family growing up. I knew my parent's loved me, but the words were never spoken. Feelings weren't talked about. I want that openness with Lexi. I want to tell her how much I love her. I want her to be able to tell me how she's feeling, even if it means she doesn't like me at the moment. I want her to be able to come to me without fear of reproach. I grew up afraid of my mother. And while that fear kept me from doing anything "wild", it also meant that I didn't tell her things because I was afraid of her reaction. I was afraid she wouldn't be proud of me...that I would disappoint her. I'm really hoping to instill in Lexi that I'm proud of her no matter what...that she could never do something that would make me love her less. How does one do that? I'm hoping that by telling her how much I love her, and how proud I am of her, and how I react to things will bring about a confidence in her that will enable her to see that. And I'm hoping that these posts will help.

When I started this blog, Lexi was just a glimmer in my eye. A dream. But I still had plans to one day print every post and make a book for her. I still do. I'm just not sure when an appropriate time would be. Her life is just starting...there will be many, many posts to come about things she's doing, accomplishments she's made...as well as frustrations I'm having. While the first 300 posts are done...I look forward to 300 more.

Season of Giving

I read an article in my local newspaper that said charities are expecting a huge decline in the amount of donations they receive this holiday season. I then went to lunch and walked past no less than 3 homeless people sitting in various places along the way (I only have to go across the street to get to a place that has numerous lunch options). It got me thinking. DH and I are by no means well off. We live paycheck to paycheck and dip into our savings each month to make ends meet. But we have a savings. And we have a house, and food on the table (well, in the cupboards) and clean clothes to wear, and toys for our daughter.

I have a "no giving" policy when it comes to giving money to panhandlers. I've been burned too many times by people posing as someone in need, only to see them get into a flashy car, or change into a fur coat. But I will do what I can, when I can. Case in point. There is a homeless man, who sits in the same spot on the other side of the bridge from where I work. Everyday, without fail, he's sitting there, reading last week's newspaper, or whatever book he's happened upon. He has a cup in front of him, but he doesn't ask for anything, nor does he "plead" his case on a make shift sign. I know he's homeless because last winter I stopped to talk to him. He lost his job a few years back and ended up losing everything. He can't find work and he has a hard time because he has no permanent address. On my way to work, occasionally, I would stop and pick him up some fruit...an apple, or a banana. Something for him to keep in his bag "for later". The look on his face would be priceless when I would hand him the bag. A few weeks back, I got him a turkey sandwich from a local sandwich shop. He was so grateful, and even said he shouldn't really accept it because it was "too much".

My company is having a food drive to benefit the local food depository. I plan on going home tonight and cleaning out my cupboards and bringing anything I'm not going to use (within reason of course).

I may not be rich, but I believe in karma. I know that if I was in a position to have to visit a food bank, I'd hope that those who could give, would, so that my family could enjoy dinner.

The point of this post? I'm not really sure. As the holidays grow closer, I guess my feelings of "thanksgiving" are getting stronger. I'm grateful for what I have...and want to share what I can, when I can. I urge everyone to do the same.

7 months old (2 days late) with pics

Lexi turned 7 months old on Tuesday. Here are some pics of her from her latest photo shoot...

30 weeks

Dear Alexis,

Has it seriously been 30 weeks since your birthday? I can hardly believe the time has gone by so quickly. You're becoming quite the little lady at a mere 7 months old (on Tuesday!). And you're wowing Mommy and Daddy everyday with your development.

You can sit up all by yourself now...no support needed. It seemed to happen overnight. One day you were still all folded in half, the next day you were sitting up so straight! And you love this new found view of the world. You happily sit in your highchair without leaning back and you LOVE sitting in the shopping cart at the store. You also now sit in the highchairs at the restaurants, or in the seat we have that clips to the table. You are so happy to be a part of everything.

You've outgrown your car seat. Well, sort of. When you have your coat on, the straps don't want to buckle...so we had to go out and buy you a "big girl" seat. This one lets you ride rear facing still...but will stay with you until you're 8 years old (if it lasts that long).

You're also rolling over both ways now and have discovered your feet...which promptly go into your mouth every chance you get. To be that flexible again...

You've started eating the Ger.ber puffs and yogurt melts and think they are the most fascinating things. We also have been giving you frozen grapes in your little mesh feeder to help with your swollen gums...oh yea! You're getting BOTH your top teeth at the same time. I predict that they will emerge within the next week. Your little gums are red and swollen, and we can see the white teeth just below the surface. You are chewing on EVERYTHING and drooling like a faucet...you also haven't been eating much the last 3 days, but we know that it's because of those teeth. Mommy has to admit, you are a VERY good teether...while you're a little more fussy these last few days, you are still very easy to console.

You've been sleeping through the night like a champ as well. It was like you just decided one night, "Eh, I think I'll skip my 2am ba ba and just sleep from now on". It's amazing.

You are also "talking" all.the.time. "Dadadada and babababa" are your favorites. But you reserve the "Mamama"s for when you're upset. Crying with your arms outstretched to mommy is a new thing...it's SO cute and tugs at Mommy's heart each time.

Oh peanut, time sure has gone by in a flash. I'm excited to have you experience your first holiday season, but don't want you growing up too fast. I know that, all too soon, there will come a time when you no longer want to be held and snuggled...and will want to do things all by yourself (heck, this is starting already)...so Mommy relishes these "baby" times. You'll be a big girl way too soon. Always remember that Mommy loves you more than anything in this world.

Love always,

Mommy

A sibling for Lexi?

No, I'm not pregnant. But I have thought about giving Lexi a little brother or sister. But I'm conflicted. I love Lexi SO much...right now, I can't imagine loving another child as much as I love her. Is that wrong? Am I crazy to think that way? I can't even accurately describe my feelings...

I loved being pregnant. Sure, there were things that I didn't like, such as the bleeding scares, the swollen feet and the evil crotch pain...but it was the most amazing feeling, knowing she was there, feeling her move, experiencing every hiccup, playing guess the body part...but the best part was sitting quietly in her nursery and talking to her. Feeling her respond. Knowing she felt what I felt. She's the only one who knows what my heart sounds like from the inside. I can't imagine NOT experiencing a pregnancy again. But then I think part of what made it so special was the fact that she was my first. I know every pregnancy is special and unique, but for me, because she was/is in every way our miracle baby, made it even more meaningful to me.

What if I don't feel the same about future pregnancies? Will that mean I'll love the child any less? I don't think so...but it's hard to think about. DH and I had said we wanted our children to be about 2 years apart. That means we would have to start a new IVF cycle sometime after Lexi's first birthday to have that age gap...and that's assuming the cycle works. I don't know if I'll be ready to experience another pregnancy by her first birthday. It doesn't seem like enough time to focus on HER. She's almost 7 months old...and I still can't imagine sharing my time with another child. I love being with her and her alone. Am I making any sense? Probably not. All I know, is my heart is overflowing with love for my daughter...I'd love to give her a sibling to grow up with and play with, but I'm being selfish...I want her all to myself.

Not much news

So I don't have much news to blog about. Lexi is her same charming self. She's been regularly sleeping through the night these last few weeks. I've been wary of posting about it as I thought I might jinx myself. But she's been going down between 7:30 and 8:30 each night and sleeping until at least 7am. Which is a blessing. SLEEP!!! Plus, she's still napping about 2 hours at least 2x a day. Sometimes she'll take a 3rd nap for about 45 minutes or so, depending on what we're doing that day.

Oh, she does have a little cough. I'm not sure what's causing it. It's a dry cough...no congestion, no fever, no runny nose. Almost a cough like you have a tickle in your throat...but it's been over a week. Any ideas? She doesn't act sick.

Happy Birthday to me

Dear Alexis,

Tomorrow, October 22nd, is mommy's birthday. I will be 33 years old. To think, I'd spent 32 1/2 years waiting for you. I'm so proud to say I'm your mommy. You are my everything. I am so happy to be able to spend my birthday with you.

All my love,

Mommy

6 month checkup

Lexi's 6 month check up was last Wednesday. For record keeping purposes:

Weight: 16lbs 11.5ozs (just under 75th percentile)
Height: 26 1/4 inches (75th percentile)

She had another HIB and 1/2 her flu shot (the other half she'll get next month) as well as one other that I can't remember...it's written in her little book, but I don't have it here with me.

Pedi is happy with her development...peanut is right where she should be!

26 weeks

Dear Alexis,

Today you are 26 weeks old...half a year. Mommy can hardly believe it. I know I say this alot, but Mommy feels SO lucky to have you. You have no idea the joy you bring to me when I see you smile that toothless (almost) grin.

You have 2 teeth now...both on the bottom. Mommy and Daddy didn't even know they were cutting through...you were such a good girl...no crying or fussing! And that's the norm for you. You very rarely cry...but watch out because when you do, it's all out screaming! You wake up in the morning and happily lay in your crib playing with your Tigger or your seahorse until Mommy or Daddy come get you. Bedtimes are nice as well. After your bath and bottle, we lay you down and turn on your seahorse and you fall asleep on your own.

Don't get me wrong, there are times when you are a little monster...but they are few and far between.

You and Daddy in the Corn Box at the Pumpkin Farm
You and me kiddo, at the pumpkin farm.
Ridin' your bike

Oh how I love you!

Tears

I did something today that I've been meaning to do for a few weeks now, but have been putting it off.

I packed away all the clothes Lexi has outgrown. As she was outgrowing things, we were just throwing them into a diaper box, but yesterday I went to Tarjay and bought some totes, and this morning, I went through everything, sorted by size, and folded them neatly into the totes. And cried as I did it. Seeing all the preemie and newborn sizes again...and my favorite duckie outfit...knowing my baby isn't my "peanut" anymore...got me all emotional. There are even clothes that she never got to wear (because they were the wrong season (6 month summer clothes etc)).

I'm hoping that my sister, or my best friend have girls whenever they decide to have children. I would love to be able to pass some of these things to them.

On another note, if you notice anything weird going on here, please be patient. I've decided to move to wordpress...I think. I'm going to try to import my posts over there and see what happens.

Sleepless nights

You may think that Lexi is the reason for the title of this post...and she is, but not for the reason you'd expect. The last 3 nights, Lexi has slept at least 8 hours...but mom didn't. Sunday she slept from 8pm - 4am. Monday was 9pm - 9am. Tuesday was 8pm - 7am. Awesome sleeping. For her. Not for me. I still woke up at 2:30am each night. My body's internal clock knows that 2:30am is about the time she would wake up to eat. So while I woke up and laid in bed wide awake, Miss Alexis was snoring away in her crib! Maybe if she keeps this up, my internal clock will adjust back to sleeping through the night! I can only hope!

Lexi also cut another tooth. So now, you can feel the sharp tops of both bottom teeth! My goodness!

She goes for her 6 month check up on the 14th of October (can you believe tomorrow is October 1st already!!).

On a different note, I think I may be moving to Wordpress. I'd like to be able to PWP some posts and Blogger just doesn't give me that functionality. So my question is for anyone who has made the move to WP...once I import my posts to WP, does that mean they are gone from Blogger? Or will they be on both sites until I take Blogger down? I'd like to play with WP before "going live" but I don't want to impact this spot too much until then.

PWP or move

I was reading Kate's latest post regarding privacy and it got me thinking. Well, I've actually thought about it alot since Lexi's birth. I know I have some anonymity, but not alot. If anyone IRL saw Lexi's photo, they would obviously know whose blog this was. I'm also concerned about someone stealing Lexi's photo and posting it somewhere else. I've heard horror stories about people finding their child's photo on adoption sites and other places. And while I generally see the good in people, and have been lucky thus far, I'm not sure I want to "play with fire".

I'm thinking about either going private here, or moving to wordpress where I can password protect certain posts. I know I have a few readers and some subscribers...so give me your suggestions. Should I go private here? Or move to wordpress?

Talking and Pictures

The content previously here has been removed.

In other news...Miss Alexis, at 23w5d has cut her first tooth! I had NO idea she was teething. She chews her hands and drools alot...but she's been doing that for months and the ped said she may just like to suck her hands the way some babies like to suck on a paci (since she doesn't take a paci). She wasn't overly cranky at any point, but last night I happened to feel her gums and could FEEL the tooth, which had already broken through the gum! It's on the bottom left side.

My little girl is growing up so fast!

We're back!

We are back home safe and sound. We've been home since Saturday night, but all of us are sick...and I'm just starting to feel better and this is the first time I've actually logged onto the computer since I've been back! I promise a post with details and pictures just as soon as I can!

Vacation!

We are leaving this Sunday morning for the first vacation we've taken since we've been married, and then first with Lexi. We're packing up the car and taking a road trip to Erie, PA, where we will spend 2 nights with Lexi's godfather, DH's cousin. We will then head off to Niagara Falls for 2 nights. Then back to Erie to stay with DH's uncle for 2 more nights...then home.

I'm both excited and nervous about this trip. It's the first long road trip with Lexi...and I'm wondering how she'll do. We're planning on leaving at 3am. Yes, you read that correctly. Lexi usually wakes up around 2:30am to eat...so we figured, we'd put her into her car seat and then leave...hoping that she'll sleep in the car like she sleeps at home...until 6:30 or 7am. At that point, we'll be half way through the drive.

I'm not taking the laptop, and I don't know how to mobile blog...so I'll be out until we get back. Wish us luck!
