I need some assvice. I've been working for my company, a large Bank, for just over 4 years, though I have almost 7 years of credited service (due to leaving and coming back). In these 4 years, I've had 2 jobs, mainly working with the same people. I love who I work with...but not necessarily the work itself. I mean, I enjoy what I do, but I don't wake up in the morning with the burning desire to do it. Anyway, as I stated in my last post, being away from Lexi is hard and I have that 4 hour a day commute as well. I applied to a few companies yesterday just for shits and giggles, and one of them emailed me first thing this morning wanting to setup a telephone interview. Now, I have no clue where this job will be, or what this company's stance on flexible work arrangements are, but I guess my question is...if you were in a stable job at a company you didn't foresee any cutbacks or layoffs at, would you move to another company and be the "low man on the totem pole"? I'm a little nervous about actually moving to another company (I know, I haven't even interviewed yet, but I need to know where my mind is on this) in today's economy when I really have no reason to leave where I'm at other than that damn commute!
I've asked my current employer in the past to telecommute, but they won't approve it, saying I am needed in the office!

Those would be reasonable questions to as a future employer. Let them know what your concerns are. As you stated you have stable employment so it is not as if you have to take 'something' because its offered.
If this is a new position you could absolutely see yourself doing then go for it. If its a "trial" position as you said for "shits and giggles" then ask --How many lay offs has your company under gone? Do you offer flex time etc...

I think you're doing the right thing in exploring your options. When it comes to a job offer, you'll have to perform your due diligence about the company regarding stability and layoffs and such. Sometimes security is more important, but you never know when opportunity is going to come knocking.
I feel like your in the best position. It's always easier to get a new job when you already have one and are not desperate. Just interview them and see if this would be a good fit for you and what you need. If not, just stay with your current position until you find something fabulous.
As with others, I think you are in a good position to get what you want. Now, it is an employers market out there (because so many people are looking for jobs), but that doesn't mean you should take a job because you can get one.
Take a job for the improvement in your LIFE (i.e. changing the commute) and the other stuff (taking a newbie position) will not matter.
I was laid off from my job in March. With unemployment I did not have urgency in my job search--so, I was completely honest in interviews--I am the mom, I need to be leaving at certain times to pick up my kids, etc. And most times that did not get me the job. BUT, I was refreshingly surprised in one interview when they said "We can work with that". And I started working there last week.
